Although the documents Haugen leaked covered a wide range of issues including misinformation, hate speech, and teen mental health, she believes getting rid of engagement-based ranking and replacing it with chronological news feeds is one way of tackling the diverse set of problems Facebook and its affiliated platforms face.
Meta-owned Instagram scrapped its chronological feed in 2016, but Instagram boss Adam Mosseri announced that the platform plans to re-introduce an option for a chronological feed in the first half of this year.
It's possible that, in future, Meta will have to make the option to switch to chronological feeds easier and more prominent, as House and Senate lawmakers have introduced bills aimed at forcing social media companies to do exactly that.
Experts on misinformation and hate speech don't necessarily think chronological feeds will solve the problems on Facebook. Kate Starbird, professor at the University of Washington's Department of Human Centered Design and Engineering, told Protocol last October that bad actors might find a chronological feed easier to spam.
The new feature is the company's latest attempt to keep people coming back to its social network amid intensifying competition with its trendier rival TikTok.The changes announced Thursday will offer up two different perspectives. When Facebook users open the app, they will initially see the usual news feed featuring posts selected by an algorithm that the company says is designed to highlight topics and friends most likely to appeal to each individual's tastes and interests.
After clicking on the Feed tab, users will be able to toggle over to a chronological presentation of their Facebook favorites, Facebook groups they have joined or feeds consisting exclusively of posts from all their Facebook friends in the order they were shared.

The Feeds tab has its own subsections that you can select to further narrow down your newly chronologically-sorted feed: All, Favorites, Friends, Groups, and Pages. Each of the subsections in the Feeds tab should show you their respective posts chronologically, with the most recent posts at the top.
Social networks offer a stream of updates from your family and friends or people you follow. But the feed you see by default isn't chronological. Instead, the social networks try to figure out what you'd like to see first, and show that instead.
However, algorithmic feeds mean you'll miss some updates you might want to see. Which is why you should disable algorithmic them and enable chronological feeds instead. In this article, we show you how to do that on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
With algorithmic feeds, the social network algorithms are predicting what you should be reading. Rather than showing you all new posts in chronological order, you'll see what the social network predicts you want to see.
The biggest drawback of algorithmic feeds is that you might be looking at irrelevant content. Not-so-recent posts can crop up in an algorithmic feed, so they may no longer be relevant. For example, yesterday's news story might have been really popular on social media so appears in the feed, but it's not relevant anymore.
Of the three social networks, Twitter undoubtedly offers the easiest way to switch from an algorithmic news feed to a chronological one. The process is exactly the same for both desktop and mobile devices.
Since Instagram switched to an algorithmic feed in 2017, the platform didn't offer any way to switch back to chronological order until 2022. Instagram once again offers a chronological timeline option.
So this led to the reintroduction of the chronological feed, which users can now choose to use instead. Instagram has now made it easy to switch between the different feeds depending on what order you want to see. This article will show you how to change your Instagram feed to chronological order and other orders you may wish to use.
Adding accounts to your favorites can help you manage your chronological feed, so you first see recent posts from your most important accounts. To add Instagram accounts to your favorites, follow these steps.
Initially, when Facebook bought up Instagram, they revamped the app to feature an algorithmic feed instead of the chronological feed that had been commonplace. Facebook did this to optimize the advertisements shown to people within the app, allowing the company to generate more revenue.
Called "Feeds," the tool is a dedicated tab in the Facebook app that shows all the latest posts from users' friends. The main news feed will now be known as "Home," and will act as more of a "discovery engine" based on people's online habits, the company said.
Facebook is introducing a Feed Filter Bar feature that will give you more precise control over your news feed. It basically lets you see posts chronologically - or by most recent, in the order they were posted - by simply toggling away from its usual algorithmic feed.
Technically, the company has offered users the option to sort feeds by most recent", but it buried it in a settings menu. Facebook also launched a Favourites feature last October that allows users to select up to 30 friends and pages so that Facebook will display posts from them in a separate feed. Now, Favorites and Recents are front and centre - at the top of the news feed in separate tabs.
By default, Facebook's news feed uses a process called ranking to show you posts that the social network believes are relevant to you. But Facebook is now rolling out what it calls the Feed Filter Bar. It lets you easily toggle between three different news feed options:
After announcing the return of its reverse chronological, algorithm-free post feed late last year, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has today shared a preview of how its new options on this front will work.
1. If my friends list is private, does that mean there is no possibility of this appearing on other peoples feeds? (assuming their friends list is also private) 2. Does this notification still exist, I remember it appearing often with older versions of facebook. 3. Is there any way people could be informed of a new friend?
Unfortunately, a lot of us think of our Facebook feed as a chronological feed of events that are happening. We check-in multiple times each day, expecting that new things will have occurred since the last time we checked.
Thanks Sean.I have found that when using FB on my android phone, you can open a browser search for FB then log in with your details. It will of course take you to the "top stories" feed... but then if you select "most recent" from the FB hamburger menu (3x parallel lines) and THEN "Add to homescreen" from your browser's menu, that will (when you open FB from this desktop shortcut) you will always open to the most recent feed. Also if you use firefox, there's an add-on which will remove the sponsored ads, which is excellent!HOWEVER... there's one really big issue for me, with which I'm hoping you can help. I am a member of a number of marketplace groups that I'd like to stay in (because it's useful when I sometimes sell second-hand stuff) and I have unfollowed all these groups so I can post to them when I need, but I don't want to see the MANY ads from these groups in my newsfeed each day. But here's the problem - when I am in "top stories" mode - no ads. When I open FB from my "most recent" browser shortcut - so, so many ads from these groups I have unfollowed. It's infuriating. I have tried 3 different browsersI have contacted FB support multiple times, with (of course) no answer and no resolution or fix. Any chance you might have a way to get most recent and also no ads from the groups I have unfollowed?Appreciate your time.Cheers.
The Feed Filter Bar offers easier access to Most Recent too, making it simpler to switch between an algorithmically-ranked News Feed and a feed sorted chronologically with the newest posts first. Android app users can access the Feed Filter Bar when they scroll up on News Feed. The same functionality will be available in the iOS app in the coming weeks. Regardless of how often you use them, you can find Most Recent and Favorites in the Shortcuts menu.
The difference between the "news feed" and the "timeline" [formerly known as the "wall" - often the terms are still used interchangeably] is a key concept you must understand if you are going to be an effective Facebook marketer. This post is designed to demystify the difference between them and illustrate the relationship between them so that you can:
The timeline/news feed concepts are confusing for most because they are intertwined with two other important, yet often confusing, Facebook concepts: the difference between a profile and a page, and the complexity of Facebook's privacy settings, which impact the visibility of your profile timeline to other Facebook users. A good introductory explanation of this is given by Will Holloway: 2b1af7f3a8
