Insanely enough, this movie did get a theatrical release in 1969. An independent production directed by Edwin Sherin, it was based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel, The Venus of the Stratosphere. It was filmed in Hawaii, but the U.S. Army paid for the flights home to the United States for the cast and crew, because the government didn't want to admit that they made a movie about dinosaurs that took place on a backwater Pacific island. The film was originally titled Man-Lion of the Stratosphere, but that wasn't clever enough, so they changed the title to The Flying Devil. A year earlier, The Raft of the Medusa had been a hit with audiences, but The Flying Devil was a bomb. There was no one left in the audience to boo, but there was no one there to cheer, either.
This movie is different. The dinosaurs have been created as part of a plot to use them for the entertainment of humans. No one knows if they are dangerous, and they are not deadly to the main characters.
An U.S. Army captain is flying three misfit deserters home for a court martial when the airplane has engine trouble and they crash-land in the ocean near an uncharted island. There they find a primitive society of cave women who routinely sacrifice virgins to appease The Great One, the top-dog dinosaur on the island. Mistaken for gods as part of a prophecy, the men must destroy The Great One or face death, but meanwhile they fall in love despite the advice of their Queen, who tries to dissuade them from being corrupted by the outsiders' ways.
Dinosaur Island is about two hundred million years too soon, but it's a great time capsule of early man: life is about survival, the big species is the one that gets bigger, and in the end the males are the ones that dominate. It's no wonder, then, that the movie of the week is made by Hollywood's most reliable dinosaur-man-in-charge: Dino De Laurentiis, whose King Kong and Gigli sagas are the two most famous dinosaur knock-offs ever made. 827ec27edc
