Thanks for this. A quick question though, there was an issue of where to meet for the power team meeting. Some members came from quite further away (including myself) and asked for a mutually accessible meeting place halfway while others said, no, it should be close to where the chapter meeting is which made it the furtherest away possible for two of the members including myself who has to come around 50km. What are your thoughts?Paul

Yellen argues that, from 1940 to 1945, the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere epitomized two concurrent wars for Asia's future: the first was for a new type of empire in Asia, and the second was a political war, waged by nationalist elites in the colonial capitals of Rangoon and Manila. Exploring Japanese visions for international order in the face of an ever-changing geopolitical situation, The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere explores wartime Japan's desire to shape and control its imperial future while its colonies attempted to do the same. At Japan's zenith as an imperial power, the Sphere represented a plan for regional domination; by the end of the war, it had been recast as the epitome of cooperative internationalism. In the end, the Sphere could not survive wartime defeat, and Yellen's lucidly written account reveals much about the desires of Japan as an imperial and colonial power, as well as the ways in which the subdued colonies in Burma and the Philippines jockeyed for agency and a say in the future of the region.
The spherical solar cell prototype designed by Saudi researchers is a tiny blue sphere that a person can easily hold in one hand like a ping pong ball. Indoor experiments with a solar simulator lamp have already shown that it can achieve between 15 percent and 100 percent more power output compared with a flat solar cell with the same ground area, depending on the background materials reflecting sunlight into the spherical solar cell. The research group hopes its nature-inspired design can fare similarly well in future field tests in many different locations around the world.
Still, the spherical solar cells may not replace traditional solar cell technology at utility-scale solar power plants, says Liu at MIT. In his view, this particular spherical solar cell design could find use in more niche market applications. He noted that one of his colleagues is currently searching for a solar cell design to cover a golf ball so that it can power a tracker inside the ball. But Liu sees much promise in such ultra-flexible solar cell designs being installed in buildings, cars, or even mobile devices.
In a bid for the most MacGyver-worthy defense strategy, the Pentagon has planned a sevenfold increase in spending on hot-air balloons in 2023. These high-flying, low-tech aircraft are already in use for surveillance, hovering at 18,000 to 27,000 meters to track drug runners. The hope is, these floating leviathans will collaborate with satellites to detect hypersonic missiles, like those being developed by Russia and China. As a bonus, the tech onboard the balloons runs on solar power.
Basically, integrating spheres act as attenuators to allow for the use of smaller and faster detectors. Integrating sphere power detectors offer many advantages: fast response, high sensitivity, excellent spatial uniformity.
If you would like to learn more on measuring laser power with the IS series, we invite you to check our tech note titled "Measuring laser power with the IS series: A versatile solution with fast reponse" available in our download center.
We currently offer only one model of integrating sphere power detectors but, as with all our other product lines, we are always ready to work with you on the design of a custom product that will perfectly suit your measurement needs.
Using a standardized protocol allows clinicians to approach each refraction in a logical and sequential manner, eliminating simple mistakes that lead to clinician and patient frustration, and longer chair time. The protocol below was developed for the University of Iowa as its standard refraction technique and we have had great success with it in minimizing mistakes and delays. We want to share it so that our fellow optometrists can be more efficient in their refractions and enjoy the positive impact it will have in the office. We encourage you to download, print and place this protocol in your office for easy reference.Taking a BaselinePrior to starting your refraction, baseline visual acuities (OD, OS and OU) must be determined. For individuals with near vision complaints, and all presbyopes, near acuity should also be documented using M-notation, and testing distance should be documented if it is different than 16in, or 40cm.
Second Maximum Plus to Maximum Visual AcuityThis step is performed when the cylinder power has changed by 0.50D or more, or if the cylinder axis has changed by 10 degrees or more during cylinder power and axis refinement.
To calculate vergence, use the formula 1/x (m), or 100/x (cm) or 40/x (in). Given this, the vergence demand in a 10-foot exam room is 40/120 = 0.33D. Therefore, when testing acuity in a 10-foot lane, the patient is effectively getting an extra -0.33D of refracting power from the shorter room. With this in mind, for every patient refracted and focused at infinity in a shorter exam room, additional minus power needs to be added to what was found in the phoropter. For example, add -0.25D for a 10-foot exam room. Add -0.50D for a six-foot exam room.
Capitalism is a type of society that is based on the logic of the accumulation of power (Fuchs, 2020a). Money capital is a particular and important form of power that is accumulated in capitalist society. But the logic of accumulation also shapes politics and culture. Politics in capitalist society is the sphere of the accumulation of decision-power. Culture in capitalist society is the sphere of the accumulation of reputation. Inequality and injustices are the consequences of the logic of accumulation: the capitalist economy is shaped by the exploitation of labour and the asymmetric distribution of wealth; the capitalist political system is shaped by domination and asymmetrical influence; the capitalist cultural system is shaped by ideology, malrecognition, and disrespect.
Digital capitalism is not a new phase of capitalist development, but rather a dimension of the organisation of capitalism that is shaped by digital mediation. In digital capitalism, social processes such as the accumulation of power, capital accumulation, class struggles, political struggles, hegemony, ideology, commodification, or globalisation, are mediated by digital technologies, digital information, and digital communication. Transnational digital and communication corporations play an important role in digital capitalism.
The mentioned ten tendencies lead overall to a digital sphere that is characterised and divided by economic, political, and cultural power asymmetries. The logics of accumulation, advertising, monopolisation, commercialisation, commodification, acceleration, individualism, fragmentation, automation of human activity, surveillance, and ideologisation turn the digital public sphere into a colonised and feudalised sphere, a pseudo-digital public sphere that is public in appearance only. In digital capitalism, commercial culture dominates the Internet and social media. Platforms are largely owned by profit-oriented corporations. Public service media operate on the basis of a different logic. However, the idea of a public Internet has not yet been able to establish itself and sounds strange to most ears, as there are hardly any alternatives to the commercial Internet today.
The main danger that public service Internet platforms and platform cooperatives face is that they are paralysed or destroyed by contradictions that stem from economic, political, or ideological colonisation, so that they cannot challenge and oppose the power of capitalist Internet platforms. Advancing an alternative Internet can therefore only be successful if it is part of a broader political movement and campaign for strengthening the public sphere and the commons in society. Advancing the digital public sphere, the digital commons, and digital democracy requires progressive politics that address issues such as the following ones:
Herein we report a facile anion exchange method to synthesize a novel ball-in-ball hollow structure of ternary nickel cobalt sulfide (NiCo2S4). The synthesis involves a facile solvothermal synthesis of metal-glycerate solid spheres and subsequent sulfidation in the presence of thioacetamide (TAA) to form NiCo2S4 ball-in-ball hollow spheres. Importantly, the interiors of the as-prepared NiCo2S4 hollow spheres can be easily tuned by varying the reaction temperature during the anion exchange process. When used as electrode materials for electrochemical capacitors, the NiCo2S4 ball-in-ball hollow spheres deliver excellent pseudocapacitve performance with high specific capacitance and remarkable rate capability. 2b1af7f3a8
