These ideas may help us understand the importance and power of religious rites. A janotsi ceremony is an example of a very specific type of sati, in which a female is killed to give her in-laws good luck. Janotsi or sati – in which a widow kills herself with the body of deceased husband –is a common practice in almost all regions of India. Usually, the widow kills herself after many days of mourning and after being given a meal of millet ('mali' in Hindi). The religious customs surrounding it are complex and less well studied than sati although the procedure for sati presented here are taken from the folk accounts of sati in the Malwa region, which forms a part of Madhya Pradesh. According to local customs, widows are sometimes given a janotsi ceremony in their husband's name as an auspicious ritual, but there can be many complications: the women may not be widowed, the ceremony may not be spontaneous and their husbands may be alive. When a widow is about to kill herself, it is important that she is provided with ghee (clarified butter) and milk. Loosely translated,'milk and ghee' mean 'living wife' and' non-living wife'. Ghee should be placed as close as possible to the body. The widow is then given a heavy weight (about ten kilos), which she places over her heart and jumps into a pit using her hands tied behind her back. The weight should be light enough to break bones and cause 'death by pain before death by noose'. The belief is that if she dies and is reborn, she will be more likely to take care of her husband and children after her death. The distinction between death and rebirth implied here should not be confused with transmigration. Spiritual healing is also often performed as part of the ceremony: the sati performs a puja or worship ritual before she dies, praying to the god Dattatreya for a rebirth that will benefit her. However, this is not a guarantee of a positive outcome and reverence for the dead. The dead are here transformed, ritually purified, and reinfused with their life energy. There is much debate about the official attitude of Hinduism to sati. While many temples claim to be the oldest in the world, it is increasingly inappropriate for a Brahmin or family to perform a sati ritual usually, and even more so to recommend it to a widow. 7211a4ac4a
